How To Get The Best From Your Consultant

When you use a recruiter to help you find the ideal career you can approach it in two ways, one by going through the motions because after all most of them never do anything with you anyway attitude or by seeing this as an opportunity for you to inspire someone so much that they become extremely motivated to work on your behalf. The latter is the approach we would recommend because if your going to spend time on something, you should want the highest return on your investment (your time).

Before you arrive

Make sure that you have the basics:

a copy of your CV
photo ID ideally passport if not photo ID drivers licence
your performance against target figures
proof of earnings
case study’s
testimonials
references

Research the market and look for opportunities that inspire and motivate you. Let your consultant know which roles motivate you and why as this will help them identify similar roles for you. Research the recruiter you are meeting to ensure that they recruit for the type of roles you are looking for.

The more prepared you are the better the meeting will be remember, it is in your recruiters interest to find you the ideal role as this is how they earn a living.

While you're there

Make sure you answer their questions thoroughly as any doubt in your voice or about your work history will definitely cause doubt in their mind. If you are unsure of the answer to a particular question let them know what you will do to find out the answer.

Ask them about how they work as a company and what can you do to help the process of them placing you. The more you understand their role and how they work the better you can manage them. Yes manage them, when you consider that recruiters speak to many people all the time the more, the more you manage them the better your results will be.

Find out what roles they are working on now that are suitable for you and find out what similar roles they have worked on before and ask to be marketed to the roles you are interested in. Agree a way of communicating, recruiters spend most of their time on the phone marketing candidates and one of the most common complaints in the recruitment industry is that candidate feel that consultants never call them back. This can cause all sorts of problems which in the end will not help you achieve your objective. Perfect the art of managing your consultant and you will benefit in the long run.

After you leave

There is no need to contact them every minute but you need to make sure that you are fresh in their mind. Contacting them with valuable information is also another way of getting them to take your call. Remember, if you work with your consultant to achieve the same goal (securing the right career for you) you will achieve far greater results.

What to do if you don’t hear back

Consultants may not want to contact candidates if they do not have anything for them as there is no news. Depending on your circumstances looking for a new job can be distressing enough and when you have spent time with a recruiter and don’t hear back or they won’t take your call it can be infuriating. In order for you to receive the information you need whether it is good or bad you must agree a framework and make sure that both you and the recruiter work together benefiting both the recruiter yourself. If you don’t hear back consistently let them know you understand things from their side but also let them know that you need information and communication as well.

When they arrange an interview for you

Get as much information from your recruiter as you can about the competition you are up against and is it from your recruiter or is it from outside. Find out from the recruiter how much experience have they got with this client and how you should approach the interview. Ask if they provide coaching or interview training. Discuss the ideal outcome from the interview you are attending. Always arrange a time to give and receive feed back from the interview.
